Courtesy Call by the Swiss Ambassador to the President of Zanzibar
H.E. Ambassador Nicole Providoli paid a courtesy call on H.E. Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, President of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, on 27 July 2026. The meeting reaffirmed the longstanding partnership between Switzerland and Zanzibar and provided an opportunity to discuss shared priorities for sustainable development.
President Mwinyi welcomed Ambassador Providoli and expressed appreciation for Switzerland's longstanding support across key development sectors. Ambassador Providoli congratulated President Mwinyi on the recent reconciliation agreement between the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar and the main opposition party, ACT-Wazalendo, and welcomed the continued commitment to dialogue and inclusion. President Mwinyi described the agreement as a significant first step towards a Government of National Unity.
The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in health, good governance and inclusive economic development. The two sides discussed Switzerland's longstanding support for health research and health financing, particularly for Universal Health Insurance and ongoing efforts towards malaria elimination. They also exchanged views on ongoing cooperation to strengthen public financial management, procurement systems and anti-corruption initiatives, including through the Basel Institute on Governance, as well as opportunities to expand support for social enterprises and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to promote sustainable livelihoods and inclusive economic growth.
Ambassador Providoli presented Switzerland's new Cooperation Programme for Tanzania 2026–2029, which aims to support Tanzania's transition to an equitable and stable middle-income country through stronger institutions, improved livelihoods, private sector development and participatory governance. The programme also addresses climate challenges, fosters innovation and promotes gender equality, while placing the most vulnerable at the centre.
The Ambassador also took the opportunity to introduce Switzerland's Honorary Consul in Zanzibar, Ms Amne Suedi. She was accompanied by the Embassy delegation, comprising the Acting Head of Cooperation and the Head of the Health Domain, Franziska Freiburghaus, and Jaquiline Ngoma, Programme Officer for Governance.
